NOAA Predicts Above-Normal 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially approaches, NOAA has released its annual forecast, and the message is clear: this season is expected to be busier than usual.

WheelHouse IT is sharing this information not to alarm our clients, but to remind everyone that preparation is power. As your trusted Managed Services Provider, business continuity is at the center of everything we do—and we’re ready.

A 60% Chance of an Above-Normal Season

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, there is a 60% chance that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal, with 13 to 19 named storms expected. Out of those, 6 to 10 may become hurricanes, and 3 to 5 are forecasted to reach major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher).

This year’s prediction is driven by:

  • Unusually warm Atlantic Ocean temperatures

  • Weak wind shear conditions

  • Neutral El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions

  • A likely active West African Monsoon, which helps spawn the strongest storms

These factors create the perfect environment for increased tropical cyclone formation and storm intensity.

Not Just a Coastal Threat

As NOAA officials emphasized, the threat isn’t confined to coastal regions. Last year, inland flooding from storms like Hurricane Helene caused devastating impacts well beyond the shoreline. In South Florida and across the nation, these events continue to underscore the need for resilient systems, contingency planning, and rapid response capabilities.

“This outlook is a call to action: be prepared. Take proactive steps now to make a plan and gather supplies to ensure you’re ready before a storm threatens,” said Ken Graham, Director of NOAA’s National Weather Service.

What’s New from NOAA in 2025?

This year brings new tools and improvements to hurricane forecasting, including:

  • Upgraded Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System, expected to improve storm tracking and intensity forecasts by 5%

  • Advisory products issued up to 72 hours in advance of tropical-storm-force winds

  • Enhanced Spanish-language forecast products

  • Introduction of a rip current risk map

  • Deployment of ROARS, a new radar on hurricane hunter aircraft, to scan wind structures and ocean waves
