A project architect opens the central model at 8:40 and waits. A drawing set goes out to the contractor and it is the version from Tuesday. None of these are exotic failures. They are the ordinary friction of running design software over a network that was specified for email and spreadsheets.
An architecture practice looks like a professional services firm on the invoice and nothing like one on the network. Three things make it different, and they compound.
File size and file behavior. Design and coordination files are large binaries that get opened, held, and written back, often by several people against one central model. That is a fundamentally different traffic pattern from a firm that lives in documents and email, and it punishes latency, undersized links, and storage that was chosen on price per terabyte.
Project-based collaboration with people outside the firm. Consultants, engineers, contractors, and clients all need access to some subset of a project and none of the rest. Access organized by department breaks immediately. Access has to be organized by project, and it has to be revoked when the project closes.
Licensing complexity. Design software is expensive, licensed per seat or per named user, and frequently over-purchased because nobody owns the reconciliation. It is also the line item a principal is most likely to be asked about and least likely to have current numbers for.
Generalist providers handle all three poorly, not out of incompetence but because none of them show up in a firm that runs on Office and a file server. A provider who has not thought about the central model, the render queue, or the license count will treat the whole environment as ordinary infrastructure and be surprised by it every quarter.

The practical failure is rarely a total outage. It is degradation nobody escalates: the model takes four minutes to open instead of forty seconds, so people open it once in the morning and work stale. Or two people work the same drawing from different folders and the coordination happens in a meeting instead of in the file.

Design workstations are production equipment. They are also the most common place a firm loses hours it never counts.
Two patterns are worth naming. The first is the workstation that was adequate two software versions ago and is now the reason a task takes half a day. The second is the one machine that renders, which the whole studio schedules around.
Neither is solved by buying the most expensive hardware available. Both are solved by knowing what is deployed, what it is capable of, and when it will stop being adequate.
