An Architectural Interiors Company Retired Its In-House Servers to Get Ahead of the Curve

JC White Architectural Interiors ran its operating platform on aging in-house hardware. Mark Feltingoff wanted the servers off site and the business a generation forward. WheelHouse IT ran the move to the cloud and now holds a standing seat in a bi-weekly strategy meeting.
They are a reliable partner that we expect to be partners with for a long time in the future.

The situation

JC White Architectural Interiors designs and delivers interiors for offices, healthcare, education, and government clients. It is a commercial furniture dealer and a Haworth partner, and it runs its own IT with a full-time person on staff.

The platform underneath the business had aged. The operating system ran in-house on legacy hardware and the servers sat on site. Nothing was on fire, which is the point at which most companies leave it alone.

Mark Feltingoff did not. He wanted the servers off site and the business moved forward a generation before circumstances made the decision for him.

We wanted to get ahead of the curve.

Why they chose WheelHouse IT

JC White brought in outside help for three reasons Mark names directly: to support the team, to get the servers off site and into the cloud, and to bring the business into the next generation.

The company already had an internal IT person. What it did not have was the capacity to run a platform migration and keep an eye on where the market was going at the same time.

WheelHouse IT is able to bring us to the next level to use all the platforms that Microsoft offers and to bring us up to speed with what’s going on.

What WheelHouse IT did

The engagement started as a migration and did not stop there.

  • Servers off site and into the cloud The operating platform moved from in-house hardware to a cloud provider.
  • The Microsoft platforms already paid for Putting the full set of Microsoft tooling to use rather than a fraction of it.
  • Consulting on major projects Where to invest, and just as usefully, what not to invest in.
  • Moves and relocations Advising on office moves and location changes as the business shifts.
  • Backup for the internal IT person When the full-time IT person at JC White is out, WheelHouse IT covers.
  • A bi-weekly strategy meeting A standing meeting on market trends and what is happening in the industry.
So WheelHouse IT helps us with trends in the market, trends in what’s going on in the IT world, consults with us on major projects, where to invest, what not to invest in.

The results

Mark names four things.

  • The servers are off site The operating platform runs with a cloud provider instead of on legacy hardware in the building.
  • A generation forward The stated goal was to get ahead of the curve and bring the business into the next generation.
  • No gap when the IT person is out WheelHouse IT is the backup source rather than a number to call in an emergency.
  • A partner he refers Mark says he would refer WheelHouse IT to any one of the existing clients at JC White.
We feel like we’ve accomplished what we wanted and they’re there for us when we need.

In their words

We wanted to get ahead of the curve.

When our full-time IT person is not in the house, they become our backup source.

There's a bi-weekly meeting with us, talks about trends in the market, what's happening in the industry.

We would refer WheelHouse IT to any one of our existing clients.

I would recommend them and I do now 100% of the time.
