It is our hope that you are aware of how much of a risk spyware can pose to your business. Your business generates, collects, and leverages truly considerable amounts of data each day that is intended for your business only. While spyware that is introduced by a hacker is clearly a bad thing, what if the manufacturer of the device installed a program that pulled data from your machine? Well, if you have a desktop workstation or laptop that was produced by HP, there’s a good chance that it is happening to you right now.
It appears that a software, called HP Touchpoint Analytics, had been bundled in with a Windows Update. This software is a part of the larger HP Touchpoint Manager and sends HP an unknown cache of data from the device on a daily basis. According to HP, this is to help relieve “time-consuming tasks of device support and lifecycle management.” HP has maintained that the program collects only anonymous diagnostic information about hardware performance and that no data is shared without the user’s express permission — but the fact that it appeared on systems without clear notice or consent raised legitimate concerns for privacy-conscious businesses and IT professionals.
While this may sound like a beneficial service, it still doesn’t explain why HP doesn’t ask for permission to install it. Security researchers and users pointed out that the software collects a wide range of system data — including installed applications, running processes, memory, storage, and more — and stores it locally, with the potential to transmit it to HP. For organizations with security and compliance obligations, an unannounced program collecting and transmitting telemetry is a significant concern regardless of intent.
This kind of unauthorized or unconsented software installation is a real concern for IT departments managing business device fleets. Even if the data collection is benign in HP’s case, it highlights a broader risk: software that operates in the background without explicit user awareness creates blind spots in your threat detection and response posture. If legitimate software can slip through without notice, so can malicious programs.
If you would rather not have a program like this on your business devices, sharing an unknown data sample with HP, it is fortunately simple enough for IT to uninstall. All they have to do is check the Windows Services interface for “HP Touchpoint Analytics Client,” disable it, and uninstall it from your installed programs list. For step-by-step removal instructions, How-To Geek has a detailed walkthrough covering both the Services panel and the Programs and Features uninstall method.
This situation is also a reminder of why proactive managed IT services matter. A knowledgeable IT partner routinely audits installed software, monitors for unexpected background processes, and catches issues like this before they become compliance or data risk problems. Businesses that rely on reactive support often don’t discover unauthorized programs until much later.
