Greenport: A Village on Long Island's North Fork

Have you ever been to Greenport village in Suffolk County, New York? It’s an incorporated village with its own little government. Its history dates back to the days of the whaling industry. It is a charming, historic village on the north fork of Long Island.

During the 1970s, the village was a sleepy seaside town, but now has a thriving downtown with many new and remodeled apartments.

In addition to its long history as a fishing village, Greenport is a cultural hub for foodies. The village is home to many acclaimed restaurants and cafes, including the famous Claudio’s Restaurant, which is also one of the oldest single-family-owned restaurants in the US.

Incorporated village

Visitors to Greenport can enjoy the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation, which is located in the former Greenport Long Island Rail Road station. They can also check out the East End Railroad Museum of Long Island. The train station was once the terminus of the Long Island Rail Road.

Although the town became an incorporated village in 1832, land speculation continued and accelerated. After the sale of the Webb farm in 1820, Greenport became New York State’s second-incorporated village. The town expanded Main Street southward to the harbor. After the completion of the railroad mainline in 1850, commercial activity concentrated in the harbor.

Whaling port

Though not a large whaling port, Greenport harbor has a rich history. It was once the gateway to the ocean waters around the world, rivaling Sag Harbor. During the whaling era, Greenport became a bustling trading town, providing jobs for locals and attracting tourists. Its harbor is rarely frozen over, and a whaling museum tells the story of the town’s past and present.

Today, the historic district of Greenport Village contains 264 buildings, of which 254 are contributing structures and ten are non-contributing. Other settlement period structures are located along Sterling Street, between the waterfront and Sterling Basin. Later, the town was an important transportation center for the whaling industry.

Must-stop shops

The main drag of Greenport is home to some of the best shopping on the North Fork. A must-stop shop is The Times Vintage, which offers vintage fashion, home decor, and a massive vinyl collection. Celebrity shoppers flock to Beall & Bell, located in a stately Masonic temple. The American Beech Hotel has a statement-making gift shop called The Shop.

Historic district

In addition to the quaint and upscale atmosphere of this New England coastal town, visitors can also enjoy the village’s history and architectural treasures. The historic district of Greenport includes the village’s Main Street, which extends from the waterfront north to Center Street. The first Episcopal church in Greenport was built in 1858. In addition, the town’s railroad industry brought prosperity and prompted the creation of the Southold Savings Bank which is still active today.
