June 7th is National Donut Day

During World War I, volunteers who wanted to support troops were charged with preparing food to deliver to soldiers on the front lines in France. The Salvation Army dispatched over 250 women there, who found that battle-tested helmets were perfect for frying up to seven doughnuts at a time.

In 1938, the Salvation Army decided to honor these proclaimed “doughnut lassies” by recognizing an annual pastry holiday that could also raise awareness (and money) for their charitable efforts. National Donut Day was born.

Here are some places you can get free donuts on Doughnut Day:

National Donut Day at Walmart

The retail giant announced that in 4,000 locations across the country, it will be giving away 1.2 million doughnuts on Friday. Once customers go to the bakery section of any participating Walmart, they will have the chance to receive free samples of glazed doughnuts and Seattle’s Best Coffee.

The offer is one free classic doughnut with every beverage purchase, according to the chain’s website.

Krispy Kreme

Visit a participating shop and get a free doughnut of your choice. The chain is challenging America to help it give away 1 million free doughnuts on Friday. Just If it reaches the goal, it will have a second giveaway sometime in June for a new flavor it says will be “out-of-this-world great.”

National Donut Day at The Donut Experiment

The Donut Experiment is “giving back, not just giving away.” The shop will be giving away one free cinnamon sugar doughnut with every purchase, and to honor the history of the day, the shop will donate 10 percent of every purchase to the local Salvation Army.

Donut Bar

This San Diego chain specializes in huge, elaborately frosted doughnuts and beer-pairing parties. It opened a location in Temecula last December and expects to open one in downtown Riverside this summer. On Friday it will give away free birthday cake doughnuts, founder Santiago Campa said in a phone interview.

Duck Donuts

This chain originated in Duck, a town on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It has West Coast stores in Huntington Beach and Irvine. It will be giving away one “bare,” powdered, or cinnamon sugar doughnut per customer at participating locations on Friday. No purchase is necessary, according to a news release.

Randy’s Donuts

The Inglewood stand with the famous giant doughnut on the roof has grown to four locations. They’ll be handing out four glazed doughnut rounds between 6 a.m. and noon at all of them Friday while supplies last.

National Donut Day at Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts

Movie-tough guy Danny Trejo has a doughnut shop on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland Avenue in Hollywood. Creations for this weekend will include Chicharron, topped with a piece of fried pork skin, maple glaze, and Tajin; Pride, with rainbow frosting; All That Glitters, a raised doughnut with apricot and glitter glaze; and Strawberries ‘n’ Cream. On Friday, Trejo’s will partner with novelty product company Big Mouth Inc. on gifts such as pool floats or mugs for people who purchase a half dozen doughnuts or more, according to a news release.

Voodoo Doughnut

The Portland, Oregon, chain has a touristy shop at Universal CityWalk and will be selling Homer doughnuts with strawberry frosting for $1 on Friday.

Bob’s Coffee & Doughnuts

This L.A. donut shop will be celebrating the day by giving away one free buttermilk donut when customers buy six.

National Donut Day at Circle House Coffee

You’re going to want to grab a donut (or two) when you head in for your morning coffee on Friday because this coffee shop is serving up a BOGO deal on all donuts.

While not exactly free donuts, Entenmann’s has a sweepstakes. You’re certainly going to want to check it out in honor of the holiday. From now through June 14, 2019, fans can submit an idea for the best donut flavor ever at If your flavor is chosen, it will be created during the 2019 holiday season, plus you’ll receive $5,000 and a year’s supply of donuts.
